At Creative Primary School, we believe that language is fundamental to communicating, thinking and learning. Hence, students learn the English language skills not only to enhance their ability to communicate, think and learn; but also to cultivate their international mindedness.

Our English Department:

  • has tailored the curriculum to the need specific to students and contextualised for their environment and social class.

  • has a good ratio of Local English Teachers (LETs) and Native English Teachers (NETs) With team spirit and collaboration these two teacher groups bring about this blend of teaching and learning approaches.Furthermore, consolidation of language learned is able to occur in a natural way.

  • believes that language learning should be fun. Therefore, our teachers have endeavored to nurture an atmosphere and environment that is friendly, warm, inviting and authentic. Lively student participation is encouraged!

  • believes that language learned through activities enhances retention and better enables the students to actually use the language in their daily lives. Therefore we have created, piloted and implemented numerous and diverse hands on activities.

Our curriculum:

The English language scope and sequence at CPS includes three strands: Written (Reading, Writing), Oral (Listening and Speaking) and Visual (Viewing and Presenting). Learning continuums of six phases based on these three strands are developed and each phase describes the learning outcomes that students at the phase are expected to achieve.

The literacy approach is adopted in English language learning in which all aspects of English is taught in an integrated way through meaningful and enjoyable contexts. Learning is relevant to students' life and is based on their previous knowledge and experiences. Differentiated and scaffolding activities are in place to help them achieve the learning outcomes.

The teaching process aims at guiding students towards independence. Hence, the process includes modeling, sharing, guiding and independent practice. In addition, teaching is designed to cater for students' various learning needs.

It is believed that effective language learning is social acts and students learn best collaboratively. At CPS, the language classroom organization is a mixture of whole class, group, pair, and individual. This way, students are given opportunities to work both individually and with their peers in order to co-construct knowledge and also learn from each other.

This progressive development language learning, together with an enjoyment of the process, maximizes students' potentials and provides the foundation for lifelong learning.
